CRYSTAL MOON GALLERY

The "Rucks Pit", a former quarry in Okeechobee Co. Florida is famous for fossil shells, especially clams, with dramatic golden or honey-colored calcite crystals inside.   The location is also known as the Rucks Crystal Mine, and Fort Drum quarry.  Availability of these specimens varies considerably.  At one time, it was mined commercially, specifically for the specimens.  Later, the pit was reported to have been flooded.  Then, rumors told of occasional visits being allowed to organized clubs.  At present, it appears that collecting is permitted on a fee basis, with material being brought from the in-situ location via machinery, and collecting being allowed from piles.  Our specimens were purchased from an older private collection.
